  • All Catholics, age 18-59, are bound by the Law of Fasting. Fasting means one full meal with two other light meals a day. There are only two days of fasting: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

    Almsgiving

  • Soup Night: Once again, the Women of St. John's will sponsor their Lenten Soup Night project. The proceeds this year will go to St. John's Social Outreach Program, benefiting local poor and disadvantaged people. Please come and enjoy a meal of homemade soup and bread and donate to this worthwhile project, which will run for 6 consecutive Fridays in Lent beginning on Friday, February 19.
  • Easter Meals for the Needy: Grocery store gift certificates will be collected during Lent for an Easter meal for the less fortunate. Money or gift cards can be put in the collection basket, mailed to the office, or brought to the office in person.
  • The Bishop's Lenten Appeal: Contribute to works of the Diocese. The theme for this year's appeal is "Charity is Faith in Action."
  • Works of Mercy: Parents are encouraged to teach their children by example the importance of sacrifice, especially during Lent. This can best be done by practicing the works of mercy:

    Spritual Works of Mercy

    Corporal Works of Mercy

    Admonish the sinner

    Feed the hungry

    Instruct the ignorant

    Give drink to the thirsty

    Counsel the doubtful

    Clothe the naked

    Comfort the sorrowful

    Shelter the homeless

    Bear wrongs patiently

    Visit the sick

    Forgive all injuries

    Visit the imprisoned

Pray for the living and the dead

    Bury the dead
